Travel the world with your dogs with Tractive

The Tractive GPS is a must-have when traveling with dogs (or cats) around the world, especially if you have a naughty furry companion (ahem, ahem… Chai!). It has given me enormous peace of mind since I started using it. Compared to previous trips, such as South America, North America or Asia, in Africa I am much calmer and I have been able to locate my two dogs when I needed to. It works in over 175 countries. That is, in almost all of them. You just need to have access to the internet on your mobile (wifi or local SIM card).

In this post I will tell you practical information, features, types of GPS and prices, subscription plans… and I will offer you a link with a discount.

Do you want to get a Tractive to travel more safely with your dog? You can get it at a discount at this link!

WHAT IS TRACTIVE, HOW IT WORKS AND WHY TRAVELING WITH IT

Tractive, made for every adventure

It is a GPS device that is placed on the collar or harness of our dogs and cats. It is equipped with GPS and an internal SIM card, which makes it fulfill its main function (although it has other additional functions that I will tell you about below): locating our four-legged friends, without distance range limits and in almost all countries in the world (it has worked for me in Africa except Benin and Congo).

Users can track the location of their Tractives through a free app available for iPhone and Android. Simply download it from the App Store, choose a subscription plan, register the code assigned to the device and add your future 100% trackable animals :)

How Tractive works

The devices are very resistant to both physical damage and water. Yes, they are waterproof, so you can put your dog in a river or the sea with the Tractive on, shower him or not be afraid if it rains. Believe me, they are resistant: after more than a year in Africa, including the whole rainy season, hitchhiking and trekking, they barely have a scratch.

OTHER USES

A very interesting feature is that you can create virtual fences to alert you when your dog leaves a safe area, such as a garden or a campsite. Or when he enters a dangerous area, such as a street where cars pass by or near a river full of crocodiles (yes, I am traumatized in Africa).

Additionally, although I haven't used this much, Tractive has an option to record our furry friends' activity (including sleep, rest time, and estimated calories burned) to give us information about their physical condition and well-being.

Functions of Tractive

Note for the geeks out there: You can set activity goals and even compare your dog's activity levels to other dogs in local and global rankings offered by the app.

TYPES OF DEVICES AND PRICES

Tractive XL

These are the different Tractives for dogs:

Tractive Dog (6). Designed for small and medium-sized dogs. The main advantage is that it is light and more attractive. You can also choose from several colors. The downside is that the battery life is lower. Price without discount (year 2025): 69 euros.

Tractive Dog XL. Designed for medium and large dogs. It is less attractive, but in exchange it has a three times longer battery life. For a trip this is important. Price without discount (year 2025): 69 euros.

Tractive Dog XL Adventure. Same as the Tractive XL, with an extra-strong case. Price without discount (year 2025): 99 euros.

Comparing Tractive Devices

My recommendation for a trip is the Tractive Dog XL. Personally I am very happy with its battery life and also with its resistance, so I do not see the extra protection of the Tractive Dog XL Adventure as necessary.

For cats, there is only one GPS available, with a choice of three different colours. Price without discount (year 2025): 49 euros.

SUBSCRIPTION PLANS

Basic Plan. It meets the basic features of a GPS tracker with no range limit and activity and sleep monitoring.

Premium Plan. It meets the basic features of unlimited GPS tracker and activity and sleep monitoring + worldwide coverage + “family sharing” (that is, sharing with other devices) + 365 days location history + GPS data export.

Tractive Subscription Plans

Obviously, to travel around the world you have to sign up for the Premium Plan. As I mentioned, it covers almost all countries, and in my experience it works wonderfully, even in Africa, where you might think it would perform worse. Also, the “family sharing” option is a plus for your mothers XD. Mine is happy because she can follow our journey, even when I have been without an internet connection for several days. My dogs’ Tractives inform her where we are at all times and that translates into peace of mind for her.

DISCOUNT

If you have been convinced by the information and want to get a Tractive to travel safer with your dog, here is a link with a discount: TRACTIVE WITH DISCOUNT. We get a small commission that helps us continue to document our adventures, so thank you if you order it here ;)

Note: The discount varies depending on the promotion set by Tractive, which is usually between 20 and 40% off.

FINAL NOTE: TRACTIVE FOR USE AT HOME

This is a post focused on using Tractive to travel around the world with your dog or cat. However, more and more people are using this GPS for safety. I especially recommend it for those dogs and cats that are "explorers" by nature, but it is also not a bad idea to be careful with those that are calm. For example, when my dog Cocaí hears thunder or firecrackers, she tends to run away in search of a shelter. If you can afford a small outlay, do so. Of course, the basic subscription plan would be enough, if you do not plan to leave your country.
